HEM

HEM (Hydro Electrique Marine) is Europe’s leading brand for an extensive range of reverse osmosis desalinators and freshwater treatment systems designed specifically for superyachts.

Our range covers a spectrum of requirements from small, cost-effective systems for smaller yachts to our largest, high-performance 80 duplex units, which are capable of a sustained output of 100 tons per day under continuous operation. HEM has extensive experience in this field, with more than 4,400 desalinators installed since 1987.

The HEM brand joined Evac Group in 2018. Evac Group is the world’s leading provider of integrated water and waste management systems and corrosion protection systems for the many types of marine and offshore vessels and platforms. Evac has offices in 14 countries across four continents and representatives in more than 70 countries.

Sustainable solutions

Sustainability is the cornerstone of our operations at Evac; our HEM fresh water generation and purification solutions offer environmental advantages by helping our customers generate fresh water from seawater, reducing their consumption of naturally available fresh water. Our fresh water treatment and sterilization solutions also remove the need for plastic bottles on yachts, helping to reduce the scourge of plastic pollution in our oceans.

Our history

Hydro Electrique Marine (HEM) began producing reverse osmosis desalinators and offering related services in Antibes, France in 1987.

In 1995, the company introduced a number of freshwater treatment systems including filtration, sterilization, and water softeners. Over the years, these products have been continuously improved and enhanced to ensure excellent performance and reliability.

In 2015, HEM was acquired by UK-based Cathelco Group, which specializes in ballast water management, marine growth prevention, and corrosion protection systems. In May 2018, Evac Group acquired Cathelco Group, including HEM and Echo Marine (a yacht service company located in Mallorca, Spain).

Today, HEM has a strong position within Evac Group as a brand with a reputation for world-class service and quality fresh water generation systems targeting the demanding yacht market.

Part of Evac Group’s extensive cleantech offering

HEM’s solutions are part of the following Evac Group offerings, targeting a wide range of vessel types including the luxury yacht market:

  • Vacuum collection systems
collect sewage, condensation, and food waste by vacuum pumping it into a wastewater treatment plant or collection tank
  • Ballast water management systems (BWMS)
remove organisms and pathogens from ballast water
  • Fresh water generation systems (including products sold under the Evac, HEM, and Cathelco brands)
turn seawater into drinking water, process water, and service water – the equipment also filters and sterilizes the water, adjusts its hardness, and mineralizes fresh water that has been created or stored
  • Wastewater treatment systems
separate and neutralize organic contaminants in wastewater to comply with national and international legislation
  • Dry and wet waste treatment systems
manage mixed or recyclable waste in a way that is safe, environmentally friendly, and energy efficient, and reduce the volume of waste through compaction, shredding, and burning
  • Marine growth prevention systems (MGPS, sold under the Cathelco brand)
prevent the build-up of biofouling in pipework and suppress corrosion
  • Corrosion protection systems (sold under the Cathelco brand)
prevent hull corrosion, reducing vessels’ fuel consumption in the process
