Anyone who has suffered the frustration of mussel blockages in the seawater pipework serving engines will know why a marine growth prevention system (MGPS) is a good investment.

In the video, Garry Churm, a technical manager at Cathelco, shows how a copper anode is installed in the strainer lid and electrical connections made to a control panel which can be mounted in the engine room. He then explains how to check the electrical settings and make sure that everything is working properly.

Marine growth prevention systems in general

One of the problems with bio-fouling in seawater cooling pipework is that it can occur unobserved, gradually restricting the flow to engines which overheat resulting in increased fuel usage. In more drastic cases, the flow is completely blocked and whole sections of pipework have to be renewed which is a costly and time consuming operation.

Cathelco are the largest manufacturer of MGPS systems in the world and produce a range of anodes and control panels for yachts of every size. These include anodes with integral cathodes which can be installed in plastic strainers.

In action, the copper anode produces ions which are carried throughout the pipework system by the flow of seawater. This creates an environment inside pipes where the larvae of barnacles and mussels does not settle and grow, but pass directly to discharge.

The concentrations of copper are less than 2 parts per billion, sufficient to prevent blockages, but not harmful to the wider marine environment.

Other cleantech solutions targeted for yachts

Evac, Cathelco’s parent company, is the world’s leading provider of integrated water and waste management systems. Their products for the luxury yacht market include toilets and vacuum collection systems for black and gray water as well as wastewater treatment plants. They have also developed food waste vacuum collection systems for the galley and a range of compactors for cardboard waste and glass. All of the Complete Cleantech Solutions have the aim of reducing the environmental impact of vessels, particularly those which operate in sensitive sea areas.
